Students are learning another language as part of a growing number of health care programs at colleges and universities. That language is medical terminology. Eponyms such as Alzheimer’s and Lou Gehrig’s disease, root words, suffixes and prefixes that form terms such as cardiovascular and arteriosclerosis – they’re all considered medical terminology. And they’re all considered vital for a career in healthcare.

A college in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, requires medical terminology as part of programs that were scheduled to begin this year at a new 44,000 square-foot campus in the city. The institution at this location offers students opportunities to participate in eight to ten month diploma programs that provide students with opportunities to become medical billers and coders and pharmacy technicians, both occupations where the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) anticipates positive employment growth into 2018.

Of the 20 fastest growing careers over the course of about a decade, ten are expected to be in healthcare, according to the Bureau. The agency attributes some of the growth in healthcare careers in part to aging baby boomers and advancements in technology.
